                CLOSE THE GAP

I was on the highway today following a large tractor-trailer. I stayed safely behind him and could feel the swirling winds all through the windows of my car. It reminded me of an blog I wrote a while back about drafting in car racing. The concept says that two cars running nose to tail can create favorable wind conditions and actually make them go much faster than each by itself or side by side. It’s called  the draft. Two cars racing side by side or one following twenty yards behind the other create swirling winds and provide what’s commonly called drag; they slow each other down. I realized that my safe distance behind the truck was actually creating lots of drag and buffeting my car. Had I been dumb enough to get right on his bumper (I didn’t!) he would have pulled me along and provided significant gas savings. What you can do on the race track is not safe to practice at home!

I thought about this a while and the Lord said, “These swirling winds blowing your car all around could be prevented.”  Translation? “Move closer to me!”  The closer you get to Christ through obedience, strong fellowship, intimate prayer, time in His word, and child-like trust and faith, the less turbulence you’ll experience in your personal life. (Drama!) The closer you draw to the Savior, the more protected you will be from the adverse winds of life (sin, temptation, poor life decisions, destructive relationships, drifting from God, loss of fellowship with your Savior, and so on). In other words…..consequences and regret. The Bible says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” (Prov. 14:12) Our own human wisdom falls far short of the Divine wisdom we need to navigate all the hidden curves and dangerous roads life throws at us. There are temptations in all stages of life, especially when boredom, loneliness, unmet expectations, and disappointments are thrown into the mix. We need the hand of God to lead us (Psalm 139:10). We need the sage advice of strong, committed believers to pray with and for us. We need guidance from the word of God. We need to be patient with God’s timing, because it sure ain’t the same as ours! And we need to trust that if we ask Him for a fish, He will not give us a snake! (Luke 11:11) God is good. His plans for us are awesome! He works all things eventually for good if you love Him and are called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28) How do we do all this? By sticking very close to Him! The greater the distance between you and Him, the stronger the winds of temptation, discouragement, and a desire to take matters into your own hands. In other words, the deep ditch on the side of the road!

There have been times in my life I have not followed God as closely as I should. I made dumb choices and major life decisions based on fear, self-preservation, and the ever present flesh. I made some poor choices many years ago and still deal with the consequences.  Those things always produce regret, sorrow, and often times difficult consequences. Yes the Father forgives if you are in Christ, but I still have scars and regrets. Maybe you do too. So what do you do about it? Move as close to God as you can possibly get! Dig into His word. Buy a commentary and look up verses or passages. Listen to podcasts from good, solid teachers. Read books about prayer, Christian growth, etc. Choose your closest friends from the camp of those who do these things as a daily way of life. Fear Him, consult Him on everything, and learn to listen and wait! The saying is quite true: You can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep! God was more direct, “Bad company corrupts good character.”1 Cor. 15:33)

The Bible says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Prov. 9:10) By fear, God means reverence, awe and humble obedience. If you don’t walk in holy fear of God, you won’t have wisdom and you’ll be left to your own ‘bright ideas’ for major choices and decisions. That never ends well! Get close to Him. Become a God chaser! Dig into His word and ask Him for wisdom. Ask Him to reveal truth  and long for Him more than your spouse, child, best friend, or favorite ‘passion’.  He is worthy. You will not regret it. He will reveal wonderful things and change your life. He will show you Himself and you will never be the same. God meant you to soar with Him, not crawl through life like a slug. Take the challenge. Make Him the first of your pursuits and watch what amazing things He’ll do in, through and for your life. Go ahead…..close the gap!
