                                                                FROM STRAY TO SON (DAUGHTER)

I’ve got a friend who brought home a stray kitty from the pound. This cat had been abused, neglected and abandoned. Needless to say, he wasn’t much on human ‘compassion’. “Leave me alone” was what his demeanor screamed. He was not interested in affection, attention, and above all else…games. My friend kept on loving this abandoned creature and eventually, slowly, kitty came around. The Bible says that “It’s the kindness of the Lord that leads us to repentance.” (Romans 2:4) Strange verse. You would think it would say the fear of God, or the fear of eternal judgment, or the fear of punishment. But no, God chooses to say that it’s His kindness that leads us to repentance.

We’ve all heard the statement that love conquers all. Guess what? When it comes to us and God…nothing could be more true! We are all at some point just like this stray. Even if you grew up in a loving Christian home, your heart is still hostile to God. We are born in sin. You can thank Adam for that someday! We have a cancer inside us from birth called sin. Until our eyes are opened to our own wretchedness and rebellion toward God (even in a Christian home!), we are separated from Him because of this condition. We are like this kitty. The world beats us up. Parents often give very conditional love at best. We make bad choices from peer pressure and our own inward desire to rebel and please self. And in today’s world, I would add that the pressure from social media to be lusted after, sought out, approved of, or coveted, only adds to the deep longing to find love and acceptance in all the wrong places.

We all know the story of the prodigal son. He wanted his wealth now. He went out and did his own thing and blew it all. He even envied the pigs who had something to eat. I believe many preachers get it wrong when they focus only on the father’s great love in running out to him. The biggest point of the story is that he came to his right mind! He saw his actions as hostile to his dad and knows he hurt him deeply. He even declares, “I’m not worthy to be called your son. I have sinned against Heaven and against you.” (Luke 15:19-21) He gets it. He was blessed and rejected it. He wanted to do his own thing and go his own way, and he did. He reaped the whirlwind. Sin promises lots of pleasure and excitement, but always fails to tell you where it will leave you after! He comes home broken, but repentant, and  finds the father’s loving arms wide open.

If right now you find yourself ‘out there’, stop. Listen. Step aside for just a moment. That bitterness against the person who wronged you will poison you. That porn you love will destroy you. That sexual relationship you can’t stop or don’t want to, will not bring happily ever after! That rebellious streak you insist on fulfilling will leave you like roadkill on the side of the road. That money, job, car, affair, house, bank account, tight body, etc. etc. etc. will end up costing you everything! Your enemy is not satisfied until you are completely destroyed! But wait! God just entered the shelter! He’s looking for a stray just like you who’s mucked it all up and squandered your life in sin.  He’s looking for someone to pour out His kindness on that will lead them to repentance. He’s looking to take you home and call you His beloved son/daughter and wash you white as snow. He’s looking to change your name from stained to redeemed and restored. That is the good news! His amazing love can wash away anything and everything you’ve ever done or what’s been done to you. Everything!

My friend’s kitty is finally warming up to the love, acceptance and warmth he’s receiving.  Love has a way of causing us to bloom like a spring flower. Gone is the fear. Gone is the shame. Gone is the desire to hide and retreat. God’s love is waiting to bring you/call you/draw you back home. His kindness will lead you to repentance. He never lies. Run to Him right now. His loving arms are open wide. There’s nothing you could’ve done that He can’t wash, forgive and forget. Nothing!  Don’t wait another minute!
